Newborn Session
Tips & Advice

Congratulations!
Having a baby is a really huge milestone in your life! I am so honored that you have entrusted in me to document these sweetest moments as a growing family. Please read these tips to help prepare you for your session!

Some Advice

Newborn session will be very natural, organic, and candid. I believe in interacting with each other and really being in the moment will create the most beautiful images. I will direct you, so you are not just standing there wondering what to do. However, it is really being in the moment with your family. These sessions are 1-2 hours long. We do take a relaxed approach because we do have to account for things such as feedings and diaper changes. It’s important to go with the flow, as the baby is the boss! Less stress and remaining calm, will bring a better photoshoot for everyone! Your job during the session, embrace your new baby and be in the moment!

Your Homework

Please watch the natural light in your home so we can determine what time of day it is best to schedule your session. Since I use natural light only, it is really important that we schedule the your session at a time when it is the brightest in their home. To prepare, please shut off all of the lights in your home for a day or two and watch the natural light for me. I photograph mostly in the master bedroom and in the nursery, so I watch those particular rooms for lighting. Once you determine the time, please let me know and we will schedule the session around this time!

What to Wear

I really do believe that what you choose to wear can totally change the way the session turns out! Coordinating your outfits can really help bring the images to life. Mom, pick out your outfit first, a dress, or something that's light, comfortable and casual. Neutrals photograph beautifully, but I do not discourage bold colors. I encourage pairing simple basics with textured overlays, such as a kimono, robe, or a slouchy open sweater then coordinate the rest of the family from there. Texture adds such a beautiful element in these sessions. Try to avoid lettering on shirts, mixing too many patterns (i.e. plaid, stripes, polka dots etc.) and being matchy, as it can make the session look dated and a bit tacky. If you are wondering what to put your newborn baby in, I believe less is more. A simple white onesie is ok, a diaper (Honest co. makes really cute patterns) Diaper covers and bloomers are some more adorable options! I will also bring some swaddles & blankets along with me to give us some options. I put together a little a few of my favorite shops, just click on these links!
In my experience, to achieve best result, we want to try to minimize background clutter. I recommend minimizing clutter in areas that we will be potentially taking the images. Please do not kill yourself, I understand you just had a baby, and if I need to, I will move things around and put them back. I am not expecting you to make your house look like a post card, but just tiding up the areas we will be shooting in is a huge help!

Heat your house (especially the room(s) we will be shooting in) to about 75 degrees. I know this may seem hot to you, but this is going to be comfortable for the baby.

Please feed the baby shortly before I arrive to start the session. A full baby is a happy baby!
If you wish to try and get the baby to sleep after feeding him/her, you may. Whether the baby is awake or sleeping we'll get some beautiful moments, so please DO NOT STRESS! This is your unique story and I can’t wait to capture it!

Like I said before, I am here to help you!
